I am IN LOVE with Washington State.  There, I said it.  What has it taken me so long to get here?!?  I could see myself living here.  We are looking to retire in Costa Rica, but after visiting here I told Hubby that Washington State has just claimed  the number 2 spot in my places to retire.  Maybe, just maybe we could get Ft. Lewis AFTER Korea.  (Hey big Army Gods....is anyone listening?  We want to be Six in Seattle next!!)

On our second day in Washington we stayed closer to Gig Harbor and headed out to hike one of the many, many state parks this area has to offer.  Jerrel Cove has 43 acres of forest and 3,500 feet of saltwater shoreline on Harstine Island in the south Puget Sound.  (Thanks, Wikipedia!)   This is a FABULOUS place to take the family for a day of exploring and to absorb all the beauty Washington State has to offer.

Just getting started. Isn't it beautiful?!?
Critters...
C really adds a new element to our life here.....this picture is after he picked up a slug!  Again, I was laughing so hard.  Have you ever picked up a slug?  If so then you know slugs leave LOTS OF SLIME behind.  It is almost like blowing your nose on your hand, but WORSE!   C had to find water, but when he did it didn't help much.  Slug slime doesn't come off very easily.
In this next picture Boy 2 is trying to figure out how to put the slug in his pocket (Reminder:  when we hike the person to find the 'coolest' thing wins bragging rights till the next hike.)
He couldn't figure out how to put the slug in his pocket, but he did make a little bed for him:
Boy 2 showing his treasure to his Daddy & Grammy.
Grammy with her grandkids....I barely miss getting the fish that just jumped in the picture, but you can still see the ring in the water.
Another picture that makes me laugh out loud - for two reasons. #1 - doesn't Boy 1 look like Jimmy Neutron?  #2 - Hubby just put a little crab down Jimmy Neutrons shirt and now Jimmy Neutron is FREAKING OUT!   (Just for the record I think Jimmy Neutron is not only smart, but handsome!)
He became quite attached.....
Sorry, I had to throw in a nature shot...  I love these flowers.  What are they?
While looking over the edge of the docks we noticed a few treasures.....there were TONS and TONS of mussels.

And check out the anemone with the jelly fish hiding among them:
Hello sweet deer....thanks for letting us invade your space.
Until next time....
PS....in the end Boy 3 earned bragging rights.  Really, who could beat out a slug?

On day 1 we headed to Seattle to explore Pikes Place and oh what fun it was!  Our first stop was Beecher's for a little Macaroni and Cheese...and OH MY GOODNESS - it was AMAZING!  Best Mac & Cheese I have ever eaten!  No joke!  I LOVE this stuff!
While we were there we watched a little cheese making.... How I wish this cheese was easier to get!
Next stop was the ORIGINAL STARBUCKS!  MIL is a HUGE fan of Starbucks and was super excited about getting a little java from here!  Check out the old Starbucks sign - pretty cool huh?  This Starbucks opened on March 30th, 1971 and it retains its original look because the Market is in a historical district with design guidelines.  (I can't believe something opened in 1971 is considered 'historical'.....dear God, what does that make me?)
Picture
The band that was playing in the background was actually very good! (As odd as they were..)
We purchased shrimp cocktail and a little smoked salmon from this place...YUM-O!
The teenage boys were HUNGRY (surprise - right?!) and many friends had told that they NEEDED to eat at Ivars on the waterfront and that they NEEDED to eat the clam chowder.  So we did.  (We aim to please while on vacation.)
Happiness is 2 kinds of salmon, eating clam chowder and having some wine....(you have to sing that line to get the right effect)
After having a great lunch our next stop was the Seattle Aquarium!
It was cheaper for our crew to buy a family membership to the Aquarium than to purchase tickets for each person individually!  The Seattle Aquarium isn't huge, but it is HUGE on FUN!   Below Boy 2 is touching an anemone in the "Life on the Edge" exhibit.  Everything in this exhibit is from the Puget Sound!
The starfish were amazing - can you believe all the colors?!  My favorite one is the Sunflower Sea Star! I'm sure you can pick it out!
Boy 2 LOVED this anemone!
This octopus is from the Puget Sound as well.
Meet Bubba Fish.
This picture makes me laugh all over again!!  This is C, Boy 1's friend that joined us on vacation.  I love this kid.  Hubby challenged the boys to fully submerge their head in the water and touch an anemone with their nose.  He told them he would pay them $20 to do so.  Boy 1 said no way (which is surprising because he ate a beetle for $20 just a week before) but C said 'no problem' AND HE DID IT....right there in the middle of the aquarium.  We about died with laughter.  I'm surprised (and thankful) that we didn't get kicked out of the aquarium!  Good times, good times!
We had a great first day in Seattle!

Those of you that know me KNOW how I dislike going out of order with blog postings (damn type A...), BUT today I'm leaving my comfort zone and making an exception.  This is what I saw as I was drinking my coffee on the back porch of our vacation home in Gig Harbor, WA. I will go back and blog all the things you have missed, so make sure you check back dates often....I plan on writing about our trip over the next few days.  For now enjoy this scene....

Good Morning friend...
There were 5 bald eagles flying around this morning.
Picture
Salmon swimming upstream
The eagles were feasting on a salmon they caught.  How I WISH I had witnessed the catching of the salmon!
Isn't he beautiful?
Two in one shot.  LOVE IT.

On day 5 we hung out with our friend Captain Bill at the fire station. I've been on many fire station tours, but this one took the cake!  Captain Bill showed us and taught us everything from how the firemen live in the firehouse, to who cooks, who cleans, where they sleep, work out, play games, how they train, where they have meetings to what they do when they get a call. He talked to us about how they lay lines; break into homes on fire, how to save people from fires, wreckage and more!  I left that fire house wanting one of my kids to grow up to be a firefighter one day!   Oh, AND something I found a little shocking  - Hubby had NEVER been on a firehouse tour!  How is that even possible?!
Picture
Hanging out in the Engine listening to what Captain Bill is telling them over the headsets.
Picture
Captain Bill in full gear (including tank on back for breathing) - talking to the kids telling them if they are ever in a fire and see someone dressed like this coming towards them not to be scared.
Picture
Boy 2 finding out how heavy all that gear is!
Picture
Checking to see if his heart is still beating...
Picture
Thank goodness it is!
Picture
Learning about all the different hoses
Picture
Checking out all the cool fireman tools! (And learning what that yellow hose behind Captain Bill is...an exhaust tube they connect to the engines, so when the garage is closed up the firemen don't kill themselves with CO2.)
Picture
I've heard of them forever, but had never seen them...the 'jaws of life'!
Picture
Who knew fire engines were so technical?
We had an amazing day at the fire station.  A special thanks to Captain Bill and to all the other Firefighters out there that help keep us safe!  (Just on a side note, Boy 3 is now not sure he wants to be a teacher when he grows up, he is now thinking of becoming a firefighter in 13+ years.)  Thank you Captain Bill for the AWESOME tour!

I hate to be the one to say it, but I'm going to...California Adventure park is SO MUCH MORE FUN than Disneyland.  Really, I'm not joking.  To be totally honest I was a bit disappointed in good ol' Disneyland.  Is that because we have been to Disney World?  Maybe.  I don't know.  It just wasn't impressive. California Adventure on the other hand was full of fun!  Our first stop was......
Picture
That's right, The Hollywood Tower of Terror!!
And all six of us rode it.....
Picture
Boy 2's scared face....
The bellhop waiting to escort us to the elevator...
Picture
And here we are on the elevator.....
Picture
Check out girl....top row, hand on head. She was having so much fun!
Boy 3, you know our tough guy?  He was so tough this entire ride, didn't cry once, but was absolutely scared to death - a side of him I have NEVER seen.  When the elevator door opened and we saw ghost, he said with HUGE eyes, "Mom that is my nightmare"!   Boy 2 was on the other side of me hanging on for dear life.  I have never felt another person shake so much in fear as that boy was shaking.  I'm surprised he didn't break his little hands he was holding onto the bars so tight!

After getting off the ride Boy 3 told me again that was his nightmare and he was certain he would not ride The Tower of Terror ever again.   Everyone else ran around and got in line again.

Another thing I LOVED about CA is the 'little' parades that kept coming around!

A bugs life, so much FUN!!  And maybe I'm biased, but I have some pretty cute bugs!

The 'kids' had lots of fun running around in Tarzan's Tree House!

About to hang with the Muppets!!

I can't believe I forgot to show you this!!  The candy is a jaw breaker.  This is the BEST deal at Disney.  We bought them on day 1 for $2.99, the biggest jawbreaker we could find!  It comes in a closeable package and hangs around the neck.  The kids all had one (well except Boy 1) and they licked and licked on these things....this one is about 1/3 of the way complete.
Picture
The cutest box of toys I have every seen!

Ahhh, what a great fun filled day at California's Great Adventure!

As you enter the park, this sign says it all.......

Can you believe we have never taken a family trip to California?  Hubby has been several times, I have been a couple of times, but we have never been together as a family.  How can that be?  Well we fixed that problem this week.  Spring break + block leave = VACATION!!

Our California vacation started off a little hairy.  I don't know what I was thinking when I booked our flight out of Austin at 6:30AM.  That means we had to wake up at 3AM - OUCH.  Seriously - what was I thinking?  In the end it all turned out fine even though we ALMOST missed our flight due to the MANY, MANY spring breakers and the ending of South by Southwest – the Austin airport was a ZOO! I have never seen it so busy!  I’m sure we gave a few people a good chuckle as we were running to the gate without our shoes on.  I’m telling you we looked like the Clampetts  (you know, from the Beverly Hillbillies) back packs flying everywhere, Hubby dragging Boy 2, me dragging Boy 3 and trying to make sure we had picked everything up as we went through security, me yelling “where is girl”…it was quite a sight. (Thank God we had Girl! ;o)

Upon arriving into California I couldn't believe how green and plush everything is!  There are fruit trees everywhere!  Ahh, I could get used to this.  Boy 3 told us California reminded him of Hawaii and Boy 1 is thinking California might not be a bad place for our next PCS move - I couldn't agree with him more!

After getting a little rest & catching up with an old friend we decided to hit Hollywood!   Along the way we saw Capitol Records......
Picture
When we reached Hollywood Boulevard there were all kinds of people dressed up as characters...I didn't realize they were 'working' for money at first, I just thought they were freaks.  ;o)
Picture
The boys enjoyed hanging out with Shrek....
Picture
And seeing his star....
Picture
Mickey was a favorite of all the kids!
Picture
Here we are hanging out in front of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre.  It was once stated that “to visit Los Angeles and not see the Chinese is like visiting China and not seeing the Great Wall.”   I don't know about that, but it was pretty cool.
Picture
Where else could I get this close to my main man John Travolta (sorry Hubby)?  It was almost like I was holding his hand.
Picture
And it was fun running into Marilyn Monroe!  (With my friend T that I haven't seen in 20+ years.)
Picture
Picture
I had read on Trip Advisor that when you visit the Kodak Theater you could go to the 3rd or 4th floor and have a great view of the "Hollywood" sign.  I'm glad I drug everyone all over that mall to check out the sign.  See it?  It is WAY in the back.  ;o)
Picture
Girl & A
We finally happened upon Hollywoods Oldest Italian Restaurant, since 1949 & decided to stop in for a bite to eat, and it was well worth it!! Everyone LOVED their meal.
Picture
Picture
All 10 of us! (Well 9, I'm taking the picture)
And look!  We saw a STAR!  This dog was so cool, just haning out in the back of his human's truck.
Picture
After hanging out on Hollywood Blvd we headed out to get up close and personal with the Hollywood sign.  The kids were so excited when they 'thought' we were there.
Picture
Little did they know we were going to 'explore' all the way to the top!  The security guard at the bottom of the hill told us it was a 30 minute walk to the top.  I don't think that security guard has ever hiked to the top...this took us a good hour to get to the top, but it was fun and I'm glad we did it, even though I was wearing (super cute) heels...
Picture
Picture
The girls after the 10th person hiking down said....only a few more minutes.....
After about an hour we are finally at the top and behind the Hollywood sign!  The kids have never been more excited!  Check out that view!
Picture
Picture
After a long day in Hollywood, we headed back to my friend’s house, put the kids to bed and headed out to dinner.  I have been dying to have GOOD sushi since being back in the states and after doing a little research I was determined to eat "Sushi on Fire!" - Everything I read about this place was positive and it was ranked #1 on Trip Advisor for best sushi in Huntington Beach. Sushi on Fire did not disappoint.  This was the best sushi I have eaten since being back in the states....plus, you get free sake with your meal so it is a win/win!
